Sushi and suburbs might not be to words that go together but their sushi is great. There are lots of choices around the area but we love their variety and quality of the rolls. Some of our favorites are the Summer roll and Crazy roll. The staff is also very friendly. You can tell that the staff cares about service and that it is a family owned restaurant. Try Big Tuna and you won't regret it!

Was really not impressed with the sushi. We moved very close to the area and love sushi so we tried it. My boyfriend brought it back home and i didn't eat anything but the spicy tuna. I am curious to maybe try it in the restaurant but won't be in a huge rush to go back. I know this is going to sound weird but it was very fishy sushi. Just didn't think it was comparable to some of our fav places at all.

If I could, I'd give Big Tuna 3.5 stars - its not bad at all but not a place that stands out from the many other suburban strip mall sushi places. Plus points: +No teppans. Thank the Lord - that also means BT is quiet, doesn't smell like deep fry & should generally be free from kids looking to see onions turned into a volcano. +Good quality fish - everything we tried definitely tasted fresh. Rolls ranged from the standards to the very creative. I had a Golden Dragon roll & appreciated that it really "was" spicy. +Nice interior. BT is small, but nicely decorated. +Quick, friendly service Neutral: ~So we decided to try an app. Normally we'd get edamame but Mister saw "popcorn chicken" on the specials board. We'd had something like this at other places & it was tempura battered and served with ponzu. Here...it was exactly what it advertised. Chicken nuggets with ranch dressing. Odd but it was our fault for not asking questions. Minus points: -In comparison to other places of its kind, the value isn't there. Rolls (unless you get the super-expensive specialty ones) are SMALL. hubs had the 8pc sushi dinner and got 2pcs each of shrimp, tuna, white tuna & salmon. Not much variety. -Prices are much higher than other, similar places. Specialty rolls are in the $15-20 (!) range vs. $11-14 at our usual joint. Pair that with smaller than average rolls and very high liquor prices & you're looking at well over $100. I'm absolutely not a fan of discount sushi but BT is way, way overpriced for what it is. If I were in the area & dying for sushi, I wouldn't pass them by but there's a lot of other places doing it as good or better for less money.

Definitely my new favorite sushi place in the area and probably my new go to. Negatives first. What's up with the carved up parking lot with reserved parking spaces for each store? Anyway. Place is a little on the pricey side. Tried some red snapper and it was hard and chewy -- not sure what that was about. It wasn't fishy or spoiled, so wierd right? Positives. Aside from the red snapper, everything else was really good. Gyoza and chicken fried rice for the kids. Miso, seaweed salad, tuna, salmon, unagi, sweet egg, black dragon roll, genki roll, Kirin and nigori sake for us. Nigiri pieces were a good size. Total came to $107.31. Service was friendly. Not fast or slow. Place was clean with ok ambiance. Bathrooms clean. Like this place over Fujiyama or Wasabi.

Met a group of ladies here. Great service, terrific food. Had the crazy tuna, crazy shrimp and miso soup. All was delish! Will defiantly be back.

Here's the deal.. I have been enjoying sushi and sashimi for over 40 years. Big Tuna is a genuine shushi bar with a genuine sushi cook. No tepenyaki, no hibachi..no bs. Sushi shouldn't be eaten in a place where they are tossing shrimp in the air and frying steaks..Sushi should be clean and light, unaldurated by the smell of cooking.. Andrew, the sushi cook, has excellent technique and makes elegant cuts. If reviewers have been unimpressed by the dishes they had, it's because the customers have no clue about good Japanese food. Rolls are passe and beer card sushi is just stupid but they have to cater to the ignorant clients. I have challenged Andrew to be creative and he has stepped up to the plate in fine fashion. To the guy who thoight the food was bland, he should refine his palate or head back to Taco Bell..This is the first good sushi place in Wisconsin.

Average sushi, not great, not bad. Seemed like a lot of warm or fried rolls. The spicy tuna was good. However the speciality rolls did not seem worth the value. Average special roll is about $13-$16

Dined in with my boyfriend tonight since it was recommend by a friend when we asked about neighborhood restaurants. Business was steady for a Saturday night and the two servers did their best to keep up with their tables. We ordered the crab rangoon to start, which was crunchy, light, and tasty. It came with an interesting sauce that I didn't need but my boyfriend thought it was tasty. We then received salad and soup. I have had better salad dressing at sushi restaurants, but the soup was fresh, with just the right amount of salt and mushrooms. Our sushi was nicely presented and we were happy with the portion size and taste. Some of the pieces easily fell apart when picked up. Service was a bit slow, but the price was reasonable and atmosphere was welcoming. We will be back!

Descriptive phrase: surprisingly decent sushi in the suburbs. Big Tuna Japanese Cuisine needs a giant sign, because they're currently hidden in a strip-mall in New Berlin and they should be more well-known. Once you get inside, you'd never know you're smack-dab in suburbia. The decor is Americanized faux-Japanese, but it's still nice. There's a little sushi bar and a handful of booth tables. I came here with some coworkers for lunch one day. The Lunch Special runs from 11-2:30 and gets you soup and salad along with choice of sushi. I opted for the Any 2 Roll Sushi Lunch ($10.55). Salad came out first. A little bowl of mixed Japanese veggies, with a sauce that was way too strong for me (garlic? I don't recall). Next was a small cup of miso soup. This was better, with a tasty and salty broth. I ordered the Shrimp and Asparagus Roll and J.B. Roll. The sushi came out promptly, especially considering we ordered a total of 10 rolls between us. There were the usual garnishes, and the rolls were neatly presented. The Shrimp and Asparagus tasted fresh and mixed well. The J.B. Roll is smoked salmon and a soft cheese. This was very, very interesting, but I think the cheese was just a bit too overpowering in each bite. Worth trying. Overall, a lot of food for the price, and good quality to boot. Big Tuna Japanese Cuisine should be on more people's radars out in the suburbs.

I have been here twice and the two experiences could not be more opposite. The first time, I ordered a roll that I loved. The second time, I could not find that roll on the menu, and instead ordered the JB Roll which was smoked salmon and cream cheese and I hated it. My boyfriend ordered two rolls as well and he said that his were bland and tasteless. The salad was average, the miso was a little too salty. The service was lacking, as our waitress showed up three times. Once to take our order, once to drop it off, and last to give us the check. The decor is very pretty and the restaurant is located in a strip mall.

We visited on a Wednesday night. I summarize Big Tuna as "satisfied." The atmosphere is pleasant. The service is very attentive. Prices seemed to be a little high, even for sushi. The offerings appear to be mostly cooked rolls. We tried the Tokyo roll, Hummer, and some single raw offerings of scallops. The Tokyo roll was mediocre; fish was end of day fresh. It seemed to be missing the fish eggs. The Hummer specialty roll had a good variety of flavor, but it always seems like cheating when you eat the "fried" cooked rolls. The raw scallops single rolls seemed the freshest and tastiest. This is the first time I've ever seen filet mignon on the children's menu! I am a little biased on this review, as experiencing sushi on the coasts puts a high level of expectation. I do find a place in Brookfield and East side of Milwaukee has a better quality of raw for the Midwest. I think it does matter on the amount of foot traffic for freshness.

This place makes no sense to me. It is in a strip mall in New Berlin Wisconsin... It should not be this good! I went recently with my girlfriend and my dad for the first time for the lunch specials. I ordered the sushi/ sashimi combination lunch, my girlfriend got the maki lunch and my dad ordered the sushi lunch. My meal included 4 pieces of nigiri, 9 pieces of sashimi (chefs choice for both), and one California roll as well as salad and soup. The sushi lunch is 6 chefs choice pieces of nigiri and a California roll also with salad and soup, and the maki lunch was 2 or three rolls of your choice (plus salad and soup, you know the drill). I can't remember the exact prices but mine was about $17, the sushi and maki lunches were about $12. Anyway, the soup and salad were really good. We all chose the ginger dressing for the salad, which is really light and pleasant as was the soup. It didn't fill you up at all, but was a nice way to start things off. When our main meals came the first thing I noticed was how HUGE the nigiri and sashimi pieces were. The portions are very generous and this was a great sign. My plate included 2 nigiri pieces of fresh salmon and red snapper each, and three sashimi SLABS of white tuna, tuna, and salmon and a nicely made California roll (not my favorite, but didn't disappoint). All of the fish was very fresh and delicious, and I must say it again, the portions were really generous. All three of us were really happy with our meals, and my girlfriend in particular loved the "Rock n' roll". Definitely not "traditional" sushi by any means, but very tasty. I would definitely say that this place is some of the best value for money, and best quality in this area. Give it a try.

Great taste for a great price. Their lunch specials offer many options, big and small, and most come with a soup AND salad, which are both very good! I did a pick-3 sushi lunch special (there is also a pick-2 option) and not only was it inexpensive, but the quality was impressive. And the service is super quick!

I began eating sushi in Japan in the 60's...I have since enjoyed the cuisine in restaurants all over the world... Big Tuna should be ashamed to call themselves a Japanese restaurant. The wait staff has no knowledge of Japanese food, sake, or even basic service skills. The night I was there, they were more intent on chasing their child than taking care of customers. After trying to choose a sake with their inept assistance, i had to choose beer, which shockingly was served warm. The food was barely edible, sloppy preparation, not quite fresh fish, and not even an offering of low sodium soy. All of which explains the overpricing...they can't possibly make a living on return customers. There are lots of sushi choices in the Milwaukee area...do yourself a favor and try one of them.

Probably 4 stars for the Midwest but definitely three stars compared to my usual sushi joints in the Bay Area. The rolls were all good but lacked variety in fish selection. I asked for miso soup and was given a generic soup with no miso.

While the creepy white kitty at the hostess booth threw me for a loop when I first arrived, the food more than made up for it. I'm used to "big city" sushi from Chicago or Milwaukee, so to find a nice place outside of an urban setting was pleasing. The fish was fresh and the rolls were creative. I recomend the Geisha Roll as well as the Lobster Roll. The wait staff was a bit unattentive, but they were quite busy when I arrived. The prices were reasonable for the area, definitely far less than what I'm used to paying. It only took 20 minutes for the food to arrive after my two friends and I placed our order for 7 rolls. It did seem a lot longer though because we were so hungry! Overall, I would recomend the place if you are in the area and looking for a good place for sushi.

Great spot for locals and travelers alike. Very comfortable atmosphere and friendly service. Sushi is always fresh and the quality and great taste is in the food. I generally go here a couple times a month, and they know my order when I arrive. I highly recommend this place over many of the others in the area.

Wow! This is an awesome sushi spot, and hidden gem in the outskirts of Milwaukee. I travel 52 weeks a year, but when ever I'm back I head to Big Tuna to get my sushi fixs! Traveling weekly lets me taste sushi at places all over the US. This place is better than 90% of them out there, and by far one of the best in the Milwaukee area. Staff is very friendly, fish is always fresh and the special rolls are wonderful, try the crazy tuna role, Geisha roll or just ask the sushi chef to make a new one up for you. I always go for the spicy yellowtail even though it isn't on the menu. This place is TOPs, and worth the drive out of the city for some great MKE sushi!

Only one thing to say about this place: Went here for a quick, inexpensive bite the other night and ordered a California Roll ($5) and Miso Soup (~$2.50.) The waitress brought out a plate with 8 pieces and I worried that she may have given me a more expensive portion. Not so! It's just a huge portion for only $5. Very pumped to come here more often!

Some of the freshest sushi in southeastern WI. I have been there twice in the past week. The fish is very fresh and very tasty. They have regular sushi/sashimi/rolls and then they have a few specialty rolls as well. Highlight of the menu is the Spicy tuna salad on the app menu. FANTASTIC! Big chunks of FRESH tuna, cucumber and orange segments in a super spicy dressing. I am addicted.

Great sushi in an unlikely place. Once you walk in the door you forget you're in a strip mall in New Berlin. Service is good and the sushi was top notch. I especially liked their presentation of the sushi platters. I have eaten in much nicer sushi restaurants that didn't have half as nice a platter presentation.

Quite surprising indeed! I'm a big sushi fan, and up until have really only tried sushi places in downtown Milwaukee. So, I was a bit hesitant to try a new strip mall sushi joint in New Berlin. Located in the new Sendik's plaza off Moorland, this quaint little gem provided a great atmosphere, a very friendly staff, fantastic sushi, and the prices were very reasonable. My girlfriend and I arrived are were greeted by our waitress, who shortly after giving us our menu, brought free bowls of miso soup which was quite tasty. We ordered 2 items off the regular sushi menu that included the spicy tuna roll and the fotoyaki, and 2 items off the special sushi rolls including "The Back Dragon" and ... "the Jimmy Smith" I think it was called. Everything was delicious, and the presentation was fantastic. The Black Dragon was my personal favorite and is a definite must try. The portions were huge, and yet the prices were significantly less than most sushi places I've been too. At the end of our meal we were also given free sliced oranges, which was a wonderful little treat and palette cleanser. I didn't try any of the hibachi or hot items, but from a sushi perspective, Big Tuna definitely ranks high up there.

I agree with the others that this place is surprisingly good. The waitress and chef seemed over worked (only one of each for a Friday night), but the food was good and so was the service. I really liked their Alaska and Spicy tuna and salmon rolls. The edamame was a little tough and under cooked, but okay. Not sure I have much to add that hasn't been covered in other reviews. I will say this place is very reasonably priced. So, if you need sushi on a non-special night, this might be my new go to place.

I was heading to Sendiks and craving japanese food. I stumbled upon this hidden gem. I would give 5 stars had I dined but I did take out. BUT the place was very nice inside despite the outward humble appearance. The staff were nice and friendly. But we are in WI were there are a lot of nice people. :) I enjoyed the food and would return for sure.

Yeah I'm not seeing what most peeps are seeing on these reviews. I had lunch here and although I didn't choose a special I thought the prices were high. This is the only sushi place I've experienced where their rolls came apart as you dipped them into your soy. I will say the waitresses tried hard - almost too hard. I won't be back - too many real good sushi places in the Milwaukee area like Kyoto.

Strip mall sushi! Gotta love it. After looking for a good fast meal in New Berlin. I found a sweet out of the way japanese restaurant! Must try the Black Dragon Roll with fish roe! AWESOME!! And the spicy tuna roll was different than I have ever had one! Well worth the try. Prices are reasonable. Wait staff goes out of their way to accommodate.

Had a rare day off with no meetings, save for one with my new realtor from Shorewest. Garrett recommended that we meet at the Big Tuna which is steps away from his office. I'm ever so glad that we did! It's a cute place, just the right size and tastefully decorated. I was greeted right away and served my Green Tea within minutes of ordering. Lunch included a yummy cucumber salad and miso soup. We both ordered the Sushi Plate Lunch Special which offered 5 different kinds sushi and rolls for $9.50. I only wish that they had Jasmin Tea to offer, otherwise, a cool place for great sushi!

I can't comment on the food, however the service was terrible. First of all, my wife and I waited 5-10 minutes before a hostess even greeted us. Add on another few minutes to clean the table. When we were finally seated, our waitress brought our drinks fairly quickly but then we waited for 25 minutes before she came back. At that point I left some money for the drinks and we left. Will not be back! If you do want to try this place, I would advise take out...don't waste your time waiting for the terrible service.

Big Tuna deserves a few stars solely due to existing as a legit restaurant in an otherwise vacant culinary atmosphere of mediocre pub food, chain wing restaurants and Applebees. Props to New Berlin for not only attracting a real restaurant, but also one with prompt service, pleasant ambience, and truly fresh seafood. Highly recommended.

Went there for a B-day mines and a friend and along with my mom and my buddies. We ate there, surprisingly not as bad as some reviews I've read. The thing is that the hostess was nice and the food is tasty really wonderful. The wait for the food was quick service and delivered to us in a artistic manner. We all loved our dishes. I'm sure to go back again.

I was really pleased with The Big Tuna, it was a nice small restaurant and quiet so conversation was easy. Right away they presented us with a bowl of soup which was perfect for the cold night. The prices were reasonable and they add extra creative touches to your meal!

Forget that it's in a strip mall in New Berlin - Big Tuna is a great little Japanese restaurant, and definitely a nice change of pace from dining in busier parts of Milwaukee. The traditional sushi is very good, and very fresh. However, I particularly enjoy the special rolls, including the Annie and the Volcano. (Definitely not typical maki, but very tasty flavor combinations, nonetheless.) The service has always been excellent, and the (complimentary!) clear soup helps tide me over during the (brief) wait until the food arrives. Overall, we are big fans of Big Tuna, and we'll definitely be back!

I am sorry but REALLY this was a great surprise. My mom mentioned that she had driven past a new sushi place that she wanted to try with me. I agreed, being my usual skeptic of strip mall sushi. When you walk in it looks comparable to other Asian themed restaurants around Milwaukee. There is sushi bar seating as well as booths and I think one big table. We usually sit in a booth. They have a variety of rolls both cooked and raw. Their sushi menu is priced in the category that doesnt make me think they are trying to get rid of it quickly (ie: no 50% off fish Mondays because we are trying to use up all the fish we didnt sell this past weekend). They had tobiko with uzura which is my FAVORITE thing in the entire world, flying fish roe and quail egg. SO that made me happy off the bat. The servers have always been attentive and miso soup comes complimentary with your meal. Since Nanakusa closed, this is my go to place. TRY IT!
